An Inside look at my new film Hidden Fear

To everybody that has been reading about my new film, ‘Hidden Fear’, I have been receiving a lot of questions about the movie. I am going to take this time and answer some of the questions.

About a year ago I started working on a project that had no title and had no ending. It was based on a short story called ‘Opus of Fear’, by Ryan Scott. Several things happened in my life and I never finished even the first scene. I have tried more than once to figure out how to make this movie for cheap and it still be a good film. By no means am I Steven Spielberg or Peter Jackson, but I think of myself more like Robert Rodriguez or Kevin Smith. I feel that a movie does not have to have a huge budget or star cast to still be a good movie. It does not need explosions or nudity to be a good movie either, although they don’t hurt!

So present day, I have been in Tulsa for the past few weeks at the KOTV Studios, and got extremely bored in my hotel room. I was going through computer files and came across this film project that I had been working on. Apparently I had given it a name ‘Hidden Fear’, but it still had no ending. So over the past couple of days I started to work on finishing this film. I knew that I did not want it to be a feature film, so I decided to make it a short film. This had nothing to do with time or budget, just didn’t want to make my first film a feature…there will be enough time for that down the road.

Now on to the questions…

Q. What is the film about?
A. This film is about a man named Danny who receives a phone call from an ‘’Unknown Caller”. The caller tells Danny that he has Danny’s girlfriend and he is going to have to play his game, if he wants to see her alive. The “Unknown Caller” takes Danny hostage in his home, by planting devices inside the home that will kill Danny and Sarah, his girlfriend. Danny complies with the callers demands and when Danny decides to play by his own rules all hell breaks loose.

Q. How long is the film?
A. The script is 30 pages, and at a table read timed out to around 30 minutes; however, with action it should be around 40 minutes. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science defines a short film as an original motion picture, 40 minutes or less including credits.  Now I am not submitting this to the Academy, but hey why not play by the rules.

Q. Who is in the cast?
A. I have no idea at this point; it is still being optioned out at this time. It isn’t a whole process like in Hollywood, but it is still an option. And what that means is I have talked to a production company and pitched the idea and a spec script. They will then look it over and if they decide to green-light the film I will meet with them about developing a shooting script and start casting. If they pass I take it to another company and the process begins all over.

Q. When will the film be released?
A. The released date depends on how long it takes for a production company to pick it up. It could be released by summer 2013 or by summer 2016 just depends. I am very optimistic that within the next year it will be released. I am hoping for a May or June release.
So that’s about all I have for now, and since this is just a short film hopefully it won’t take too much time and money to produce. I also hope to make it available online for free.
